Do you have a computer? Are you a good typist? Then why haven't you packed in the day job and started earning thousands of dollars a week doing data entry work from home? If the ads are to be believed, there are tons of home based data entry jobs out there for the taking, and even if you don't have any experience at all, companies will be vying for the chance to pay you thousands to enter their data for them. Of course, the caveat there is "if the ads are to be believed." The truth is that they are probably not. Data entry is a real job, but the world of home based data entry job is overpopulated with scams and fly by night operations that might leave you worse off financially than they found you.
Most people are too savvy to fall for the old envelope stuffing ads or the pyramid schemes, but the idea of entering data for a living just seems to make sense. After all, there was a life before the world went digital, and thousands of companies have a backlog of information that needs to be entered online. Even more companies need someone to enter all of their current, day to day information, like invoices, order and so on. The idea that you can do this from home, and make a lot of money doing it, is just logical. So, what's the problem?
Well, the problem is that while most companies do need someone doing data entry work, they aren't too keen on hiring a home based worker. Allowing you to work from home would mean that they trust you to take potentially sensitive information out of their headquarters and to your house. The idea of hiring someone for a job like this in a telecommute position, in which you may never meet the person you are working for face to face, is even less likely to happen. No company wants to give a complete stranger their delicate files to sift through.
Most supposed data entry jobs at home require you to make an initial investment. Not unlike the old envelope stuffing schemes, these companies ask you to pay for a starter kit and a processing fee before they start giving you work. The problem is that after you pay these things, you're not likely to see the work pouring in. Many of these companies simply make money by getting as many people to buy starter kits as they can and then making a run for it.
Data entry can be a legitimate and well paying job. It is just seldom a work at home position. If you are interested in a data entry home job, do your homework first and investigate to see if the company has any complaints. There is no reason to pay anyone to get a job, so if you're being asked for up front money, run the other way. Sometimes too good to be true really is. Trust your gut instincts.
